The terrain of Hangzhou is high in the south and low in the north. Emperor Gaozong of the Song Dynasty adapted to local conditions and built the Southern Song Imperial City Palace on Phoenix Mountain overlooking the Qiantang River and West Lake. Though the palace has long since been obliterated in history, visitors can still feel the lingering charm of the imperial city and reminisce about history through the ruins.
