Ruins of the Southern Song Dynasty Imperial City

The ruins of the imperial city, located at the eastern foot of Fenghuang Mountain, were built in the third year of Jianyan during Emperor Gaozong’s reign of the Southern Song Dynasty (1129 AD) and destroyed in a fire during the Yuan Dynasty. The imperial city extended westward from Fengshan Gate to the western foot of Fenghuang Mountain, and northward from Tiaozhou Bay to Wansongling Mountain. It is divided into two parts, north and south. In the south is the imperial city, with palaces, pavilions, towers, gardens, etc., arranged according to the natural topography. It was described in a history book as "magnificent, exquisite, golden, emerald and overflowing with red, like a heavenly palace".
