Hangzhou has long been known as the Capital of Silk and the history of Hangzhou Brocade can be traced back to the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period when Qiu Liu, the king of Wuyue State, established an official silk workshop "Weaving House" in Hangzhou. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the "Hangzhou Weaving Bureau" had become one of the top three state-owned weaving organizations, whose products were for the exclusive use of the court. High-quality silk and fine craftsmanship have made Hangzhou Brocade a famous silk-weaving variety in China, and it has played a major role in the development of brocade in China. In 2005, Hangzhou Brocade was included in the first representative list of intangible cultural heritage in Zhejiang.
