A Treasured Cool-Down Spot in the Heart of Hangzhou

In the heart of Hangzhou lies a hidden gem for summer relief: a cooling shelter that opens its doors each summer. A netizen recently shared on social media, “I've never visited the cooling shelter that opens in summer. Despite visiting Shiwukui Lane numerous times, I had no idea there was such a hidden cool spot in the corner—the Sipailou Summer Cooling Shelter.”

Located at No. 38 Sipailou, this cooling shelter is one of five newly opened this year to provide comfort during the sweltering summer months.

Visitors, including many from outside the city, flock to this unique destination.

On July 21, as the outdoor temperature soared to a scorching 38°C, stepping into the cooling shelter felt like entering a refreshing oasis. A cool breeze welcomed guests, and a thermometer inside displayed a comfortable 26°C.

Spanning over 1,000 square meters, the Sipailou Summer Cooling Shelter stands out as one of the most vibrant and lively spots for respite in Hangzhou.

Staff reported that on weekdays, the shelter accommodates around 1,000 visitors, while weekends can see numbers soar to 2,000, with numerous tourists eager to capture the experience.

According to officials from the Municipal National Defense Office, plans are underway to enhance the shelter with sports facilities, including a pickleball area suitable for all ages.

Since its inception in 2003, when Hangzhou first opened cooling shelters to the public for free, this summer initiative has been a cherished community service for 22 years. This year, five cooling shelters have been organized, operating daily (with no breaks on weekends) from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and are set to remain open for two months.

In addition to the Sipailou Summer Cooling Shelter, Hangzhou has also opened several other cooling locations: the Baimamiao Lane Cooling Shelter (No. 48 Baimamiao Lane), the Shuguang Road Cooling Shelter (No. 97-1 Shuguang Road), the Mantoushan Road Cooling Shelter (No. 27 Mantoushan Road), and the No. 2 Exit of Metro Line 2 and Line 4 Cooling Shelter (near No. 43 Yuhuangshan Road).
