Jiaxing is the birthplace of the Majiabang culture of the Neolithic period and the Jiangnan culture. Talents in Jiaxing emerged in large numbers, such as Mao Dun, Jin Yong (Louis Cha), Jin Xueshu, Xu Zhimo, Chen Shiingshen, and other famous masters.

The natural scenery of Jiaxing is well-known in Jiangnan because of the coexistence of tides, lakes, rivers, and the sea in the area. Being an excellent tourist city and a national garden city in China, it is home to three 5A-level scenic areas, Nanhu, Wuzhen, and Xitang, and some 4A-level scenic spots such as Yanguan (a vantage point to view Qianjiang Tidal Bore), Nanbei Lake, and Qiyuan, which constitute the characteristics of a Jiangnan water town. The Wuzhen Theater Festival and Xitang Hanfu Culture Week have been held annually in the city since 2013. In 2014, Wuzhen became a permanent venue for the World Internet Conference.
