Museum of Seawall Site of Hangzhou

The Qiantang River is surging forward and the ancient seawalls look majestic. Hundreds of years ago, people built seawalls on both sides of the estuary to resist the invasion of tidal waves, leaving not only grand and exquisite historical relics, but also a vivid scene in which men live in harmony with nature. Hundreds of kilometers of seawalls have been defending the safety and property of residents living on both sides of the river.  It can be said that thanks to the seawall, Hangzhou is always peaceful and beautiful.

After three years of construction, on January 7, 2020, the Museum of Seawall Site of Hangzhou was officially open to the public. The museum is the first state-owned museum in Shangcheng District and the only museum of seawall ruins in China. With a section of existing seawalls that were built in the Qing Dynasty and look like fish scales, the museum displays the seawall's historical changes, cultural value and spiritual connotation. It also integrates collection, research, experience and education. The museum covers an area of 6,200 square meters, including the exhibition hall of the historical site, the hall of seawall culture, the temporary exhibition hall and the hall for experiencing culture.
