Lou Wai Lou, founded in the 28th year of Daoguang Emperor (1848 AD), has been standing at the foot of the Solitary Hill (Gushan Hill) and facing south towards the picturesque West Lake for over 170 years. During more than 170 years of operating, Lou Wai Lou has served numerous famous guests from all over the world, including Chinese politicians Sun Yat-sen, Chiang Kai-shek, Zhou Enlai, Lien Chan, former Italian President Alessandro Pertini, former Prime Minister of Czechoslovakia William Siroky and writer Lu Xun.

In recent years, Lou Wai Lou hosted the luncheon for the spouses of heads of states for the G20 Hangzhou Summit in 2016. The 2018 TV series "Lou Wai Lou" was a hit on CCTV and became a hot topic of discussion around the world. In 2019, the movie "Xingfu de Weidao" (Taste of Happiness) used Lou Wai Lou as a backdrop for filming, becoming another highlight moment for the restaurant.
