Wansong Academy is located south of Wansong Hill (万松岭) on Phoenix Ridge (凤凰山), and it's a famous institution of higher education at a time when it was the general belief that to be a scholar is the top of society.

Dacheng Hall (大成殿) is the core part of the Wansong Academy. It used to be the place where teachers and students offered sacrifices to Confucius and other famous scholars of the Confucian school.

It's in this over-400-year academy that the story of "The Butterfly Lovers (Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai)" took place. "The Butterfly Lovers" is a famous Chinese opera that dates back to the Jin Dynasty (265-420 AD) and is one of the four ancient Chinese folk love stories. In Wansong Academy, there are trails of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai everywhere. Approaching the front door of the academy, you will see a big stone on which are engraved Zhu Yingtai in men's clothes, and Liang Shanbo sitting upright. They are talking and laughing. Yuxiu Pavilion (毓秀阁) is a must-visit scenic spot, where Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai used to study side by side. Because of the beautiful love story, Wansong Academy now has become a place where people try to find their true love.
