Seeking the Dreams at Historic Beishan Street

北山街(北街梦寻).jpg

Beishan Street connects Baochu Road (保淑路) on the east, Shuguang Road (曙光路) on the west, and faces West Lake on the south, Precious Stone Hill (宝石山) on the north. This 2,600-meter-long street is the only historic street in the West Lake Scenic Area. Along the street are many famous villas, like the Former Villa of Chiang Ching-kuo (蒋经国湖畔别墅), Bao Qing Villa (抱青别墅), and Qiu Shui Villa (秋水山庄). For this, the street is then aptly named "the Street of Famous Villas".

Most of the architecture on Beishan Street dates back to the last century. They are of various types, from mansions to private houses, from traditional Chinese style to western style. The street witnessed the prosperous Hangzhou during the Republican Era (民国时期) and is a veritable museum without walls, showing visitors this history and its legacy.
