China Design Museum is the first museum in China to have collected original serial works of Western modern design. In 2011, with the support of the Hangzhou Municipal People’s Government, “the serial works of Western modern design with Bauhaus as the core” were moved to the China Academy of Art from Germany, and the event hit the headlines of that year in Chinese culture circles. In 2012, the People’s Government of Zhejiang Province approved the construction of the China Design Museum, in the hope of building the China Academy of Art into a world-class university and in doing so, promoting the development of Zhejiang’s culture and education. On Feb 26, 2014, the China Design Museum designed by the Pritzker Prize winner, the famous Portuguese architect, Álvaro Siza, held its foundation stone laying ceremony. On April 8, 2018, that is, the 90th anniversary of the China Academy of Art, the China Design Museum finally opened after six years of construction.

China Design Museum is the first design museum in China in the real sense and the largest design museum in Asia. The museum complex is comprised of three buildings covered with red sandstone bricks and enhanced with beige marble stones to form a triangle structure. The museum complex is a typical representation of modernism architecture style and aesthetics by Álvaro Siza. The construction area of the museum is 16,800 sq m with 6,300 sq m dedicated to exhibition halls, 4,500 to storehouses, 3,000 to public education zones, and 1,200 to study. The original intention of founding the museum was to preserve, display, and study the serial collections of Western modern design with Bauhaus as the core. Besides the function of displaying, the museum also sets up documentation centers, in-house designers' studios, children's workshops, multi-function halls, lecture halls, artwork stores, cafes/restaurants, a roof garden, and bookstores to make everyone's visit to the museum fun and colorful.
