Autumn Moon Over the Calm Lake

Autumn Moon Over the Calm Lake, one of the Ten Poetically Named Scenic Places of the West Lake in the Southern Song Dynasty, is located by the lake in the south-east corner of Gushan Hill. Covering an area of about 0.16 ha, it is one of the best places offering a panoramic view of the waters of the lake.

The Scenic Place was notable for the view of the moon from a boat on the lake on autumn nights in the Southern Song Dynasty, when it was first named. In the reign of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty, during his tour of the West Lake, the emperor inscribed the name of the scenic place and designated the lakeside yard in the south-east corner of Gushan Hill as its site, which has remained so till today.
