Lingering Snow on Broken Bridge, one of the Ten Poetically Named Places of the West Lake in the Southern Song Dynasty, is located at and around Duanqiao Bridge (literal meaning: broken bridge) at the east end of Bai Causeway in the north of the lake, with an area of about 2.61 ha. Bai Causeway links Gushan Hill and the shore in the Northeast corner of the lake, dividing the lake into a northern and a southern part. Since the Broken Bridge offers an unimpeded view, it is the best place to see all the scenic places in the south and north parts of the lake.
The Duanqiao Bridge has been the most famous one among bridges over West Lake since ancient times. Besides the reason that it was erected in the Tang Dynasty, it was an important site in "the White Snake", one of the top four folk stories in China. Several important stories of the hero and heroine took place here. There have been several explanations for the name "Lingering Snow on Broken Bridge", including the one that it was originally named Bridge of the Duan's and later became Duanqiao due to the same pronunciation. Among them, the most popular one is that when it is clear after the snow, and viewed from the Duanqiao Bridge to the west and the north, it seems that the Gushan Hill and Geling Ridge are covered with crystal jade, with its clear and cool beauty.
