Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, one of the Ten Poetically Named Scenic Places of the West Lake in the Southern Song Dynasty, is located at Lesser Yingzhou Islet and the waters to the south in the southwest of the Main Lake, with an area of about 7.67 ha. It is notable for its water garden and as a scenic place for viewing the moon.
Three stone pagodas were erected to mark off the "no-planting" zone in the waters in the Northern Song Dynasty, and the original name referred to their reflections in the lake in the moonlight. The pagodas were neglected and collapsed after the Song Dynasty. With the dredging of the lake and the rearrangement of the causeways and islets, the spot turned into a water garden on Lesser Yingzhou Islet and three pagodas in water to the south in the Ming Dynasty. It was major restored in the period from the reign of Kangxi to that of Qianlong (17th-18th centuries) in the Qing Dynasty and has been preserved till today.
