Twin Peaks Piercing the Cloud

Twin Peaks Piercing the Cloud, one of the Ten Poetically Named Scenic Places of the West Lake in the Southern Song Dynasty, consists of the two highest peaks in the north and south among the hills to the west of the lake and the viewing place by Hongchun Bridge in its northwest corner.

The two peaks are 5km from one another, and each peak was topped by a historic pagoda in the Southern Song Dynasty. On a cloudy and misty day, one looking west from the lake could see the tips of the pagodas stand out among the hazy peaks, hence the name "Twin Peaks Piercing the Cloud." Both pagodas collapsed in the Qing Dynasty. In 1699, the 38th year of Kangxi, during the emperor's tour of Hangzhou, a viewing pavilion and an imperial stele pavilion were built by Hongchun Bridge as viewing places. The landscape area includes the hills to the west of the lake and a panoramic view of the lake from the top of the two peaks.
