Xiaohe Straight Street

Located at the intersection of the Grand Canal and the Yuhangtang River, Xiaohe Straight Street is one of the most notable pedestrian streets in Hangzhou, just like Hefang Street.

Centered on the unassuming Yuhangtang River, Xiaohe Straight Street, flanked by ancient Chinese-style business and residential houses, is a typical example of urban commercial blocks along the Yangtze River Delta. Buildings here are mainly made of concrete on the first floor and wood on the second.

Due to its favorable location, Xiaohe Straight Street experienced an economic boom during the late Qing Dynasty (1636-1911) and evolved into a bustling marketplace and a key wharf for barges traversing the waters of the Grand Canal. With the decline of the canal, the living conditions for the residents along the waterfront deteriorated accordingly.

To restore its former glory and to provide tourists an opportunity to experience the timeless charm along the Grand Canal, the Hangzhou Municipal Government embarked on a massive renovation project on the original site of Xiaohe Street in 2007. Nowadays, this street lined with warehouses, handicraft workshops, teahouses, and restaurants, radiates again and might beckon to those romantic souls. In such a tranquil and peaceful environment, you can feast your eyes on dazzling sculptures done by local farmers, sample street snacks or buy small gifts for your friends in your hometown. All these elements incarnate the beauty of Hangzhou.
