Fajing Nunnery is the lower Tianzhu Temple among the "Three Temples at Tianzhu". Of the three temples, the Fajing Nunnery is the oldest, more than 1,600 years old. It is the only nunnery in Hangzhou.

Fajing Nunnery was reduced to ashes in the 11th year of Xianfeng (1861) in the Qing Dynasty and rebuilt again in the 8th year of Guangxu (1882). Before 1949, the nunnery had been out of repair for many years, and most of the buildings were damaged. After 1950, some of the relatively intact buildings were used as warehouses for traditional Chinese medicinal materials. It was converted into a factory around 1958. In 1982, the Buddhist Association of Hangzhou was re-established. By the end of 1989, the three halls on the central axis of the temple and other halls had been renovated and all 49 Buddha statues were gilded.
