Hangzhou Workmanship Demonstration Pavilion is located inside Qiaoxi Historical Street, a World Cultural Heritage, and next to the China Grand Canal World Heritage. It is the rebuilding of the historical site of Tongyi Cotton Factory, which was built in 1896, and changed its official name to “Hangzhou First Cotton Factory" in 1956. The workshops and other buildings that survived are typical representatives of Hangzhou's architecture of the Republic of China era. The internal structures were perfectly preserved and have important value of historical research. They have been listed as national key heritage conservation units.
The Workmanship Demonstration Pavilion opens to the public in May, 2011. The total area of the hall is 3200 m2. It is the first new concept of “intangible cultural heritage" experience museum in Hangzhou which integrates interactive teaching, hands-on experience of intangible culture heritage and folk art performance in one. In 2012, Hangzhou was titled by UNESCO as the City of Crafts and Folk Art, while the Workmanship Demonstration Pavilion became one of the ten inheritance bases for the City of Crafts and Folk Art. Visitors can experience about 20 special Chinese Traditional Arts and Intangible Cultural Heritage Crafts such as bamboo weaving and paper cuttings.
