Xihu Qin Society, one of the national guqin societies applying for UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage, is the source of the new Zhe School guqin. The origin of Xihu Qin Society can be traced back to 1928, more than 90 years ago, when artists Xu Yuanbai, Ma Yifu, Zhang Zongxiang, Zhang Daqian, Xu Yingpu, Lu Futing, Jiang Su'an, Liang Zaiping, etc. founded "Xihu Monthly Gathering". The gatherings were located in Xu Yuanbai's private residence at the time, the "Banjiao Mountain House" next to the Leifeng Pagoda, and then moved with Xu Yuanbai's family to the current site of "Xihu Qin Society" at 17 Gou Shan Li.
Xihu Monthly Gatherings focused mainly on activities of guqin art exchange. Xu Yuanbai regarded protecting the traditional Chinese culture and inheriting Zhe School guqin art as his own responsibility, making it his family motto. In 1979, Hangzhou guqin enthusiasts led by Xu Yuanbai's son Xu Kuanghua, formed the "Hangzhou Guqin Research Group" with the assistance from the Municipal Cultural Association and the Municipal Music Association. In 1986, with the support of the Provincial Music Association, "Xihu Qin Society" was officially established.
