About Inheritance: Shijing Mountain

Located in Jinqiao Community, Jincheng Street, Lin'an District, Hangzhou City, Shijing Mountain (石镜山) is an isolated small stone mountain on the west side of Gongchen Mountain and south side of Jinxi River. It is about 30 meters above sea level, and on the west side of the mountain, there is a stone cave, about 5 meters deep, which people can enter and exit. There is a round stone on the east peak, with a diameter of 0.9 meters, and its wall is like a mirror, so the mountain is named Shijing (stone mirror) Mountain.

Speaking of Shijing Mountain, there is a legend about Qian Liu, the king of Wuyue, when he was a child. Qian Liu (King Wusu of Wuyue State), known as Poliu as a child, was born into a poor peasant family in Qianwulong at the foot of Daguan Mountain in Lin'an. He was strong even as a child, and used to play with other children in Shijing Mountain. According to legend, while the young Poliu was looking into the stone mirror, he appeared to be wearing a royal crown and a garment with a jade belt in the stone, while the others did not. The children were very much surprised. When Qian Liu told his father the situation, his father didn’t believe him and went to the stone mirror with him to test it, only to find out that it was true. Qian Liu’s father had quite a surprise. In the meantime, he prayed secretly to the stone mirror: If my son can become rich and powerful in the future, and make the Qian family flourish, I hope that the gods will hide the image of my son being a king in the stone mirror from others, so as not to cause him any harm. The next day, when young Poliu and his friends went to play at the foot of Shijing Mountain again, people could only see the image of a child instead of a king wearing a royal hat and clothes in the stone mirror.

In the fourth year of Guanghua (901), Emperor Zhaozong of the Tang Dynasty issued an edict to change Shijing Mountain to "Yijin Mountain (衣锦山)". It’s recorded in Zhang Yu's poem "Yijin Mountain” that “The ancient stone mirror in Lin'an Mountain once reflected the image of Qin Liu being a king. The gods sent purple moss to wrap the stone mirror and no one could open it.”  After Qian Liu became the envoy of Zhenhai and Zhendong armies and was titled King Nankang, he returned home gloriously and went specially to see the Stone Mirror and wrote "Shijing Mountain Poem and Preface. The statue and temple that Qian Liu built on this stone at the time are long gone, but the poem he left behind confirms the legend of his childhood. It brings us infinite space for reverie, allowing us to reminisce about the past and the present, and appreciate history.
