Tonglu is of great antiquity and features a galaxy of talents. It is known as "a land of exquisite beauty and great talents; and a state of elegance and civilization". Fan Zhongyan, a famous official in the Northern Song Dynasty, was impressed by the peculiar-shaped mountains and rivers in this land, praised it as "Elegant Tonglu", and wrote the famous book "Elegant Tonglu County · Ten Odes".
