Hu Qing Yu Tang was founded in the 13th year (1874 AD) of the reign of Emperor Tongzhi of the Qing Dynasty. The heritage buildings cover an area of nearly 4000 square meters. The museum is comprised of four sections, a display hall, a workshop (interest room), a business hall, and a famous doctor hall. The exhibits, through introducing the general survey of Chinese materia medica, the development history of Hu Qing Yu Tang, specimens, pharmaceuticals, manual-operation workshop, etc., enable the viewers to have a certain understanding of the origin, formation, development and usage of traditional Chinese medicine as well as the distinctive features of Hu Qing Yu Tang.
In 1988, the “heritage building of Hu Qing Yu Tang” was listed as a historical and cultural relic under state protection. In 2006, the traditional Chinese medicine culture of Hu Qing Yu Tang was incorporated into the directory of the first batch of intangible cultural heritage of China. In 2018, it was designated as the national TCM culture propaganda and education base by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Hu Qing Yu Tang Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum is the first national second-level museum with a theme of traditional Chinese medicine in China. Visitors here can not only appreciate the "original" Hu Qing Yu Tang's ancient architecture but also enjoy the essence of the treasure house of traditional Chinese medicine.
