To Hangzhou, the arrival of 2022 heralds the approaching of a super big event. The 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 is about to raise the curtain in September. There are altogether 55 sporting venues for the Hangzhou Asian Games, some are newly built and some are renovated. Today, let’s check some of the interesting Asian Games sporting venues out.
Hangzhou Olympics Sports Center, the Main Stadium
The main stadium of Hangzhou Olympics Sports Center (杭州奥体中心体育场) on the banks of Qiantang River is also widely known as “the Big Lotus”. When the time comes, the opening and closing ceremonies of the Hangzhou Asian Games, the track and field events, and the opening and closing ceremonies of the Hangzhou Asian Para Games will be held here.
The “Big Lotus” composed of 28 big lotus petals and 27 small lotus petals blooming on the southern bank of Qiantang River is indeed the central role of the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022.
The "petals" of the "Big Lotus" are not solid. Instead, they use perforated metal plates as the structure, which show different colors and bring people different feelings in different seasons when light shines through these translucent "petals".
80 thousand seats of five different colors, red, purple, gray, light blue and dark blue resemble a rainbow that encircles the sporting venue. The inclination of the grandstand is designed according to the standard of human sight so that the spectators can always have the best match viewing experience.
Hangzhou Olympics Sports Center, the Tennis Center
The Tennis Center of Hangzhou Olympics Sports Center (杭州奥体中心网球中心) on the banks of Qiantang River and “the Big Lotus” echo each other from a distance. It is affectionately called “the Little Lotus” by all. It pioneered the “Open and Close Rotation Principle” in the design of its roof, where eight lotus petal-shaped steel frames open and close simultaneously through the control of computers, highlighting the intelligent concept of the 19th Asian Games.
Its steel dome is shaped like a ring of lotus petals when viewed from above. The lower half is composed of 24 lotus petals, while the upper half is made of eight rotatable “big lotus petals”. The top of the venue can be opened and closed according to the weather, and each opening and closing time is about 20 minutes. When the dome is opened, looking down from the sky, the venue is like a blooming lotus flower.
Huanglong Sports Center
Originally built in 1997, Huanglong Sports Center in the city center is the landmark venue of the renovated Asian Games venues. The two high towers in the south and north of the stadium are given new missions. The giant high-definition screen consisting of six small ones can perform light shows and can also broadcast competitions and performances.
Once the renovation of the stadium is finished, there will be two circular screens, the upper one and the lower one. They are 1 meter tall, 590 meters long and 490 meters long respectively. It will become "the first circular-screen stadium in the country".
After renovation, Huanglong Sports Center will have the most professional football lawn system, Vertical Stitching Hybrid Grass System.

Gongshu Canal Sports Park
Gongshu Canal Sports Park consists of "one stadium, one gymnasium, one square and two centers". It features the main structure of "the gymnasium in the south and the stadium in the north". It not only is home to Asian Games venues but also is a comprehensive urban sports park. I believe that some of you are eager to check it out!
Gongshu Canal Sports Park Stadium
“There is the Lotus Bowl in the south and there is Hangzhou Umbrella in the north”. The hockey field that has the theme of “Hangzhou Oil-paper Umbrella” is the only newly-built venue in the Hangzhou Urban Area. It is a light structure designed according to the skeleton of the bamboo-made oil paper umbrella and it’s of strong Hangzhou style.
Gongshu Canal Sports Park Gymnasium
The appearance of Gongshu Canal Sports Park Gymnasium (拱墅区运河体育公园体育馆) features the hyperboloidal fish scale-shaped metal screen wall and rhombic fish scale-shaped glass wall adding radiance to each other. Every casual snap of it promises a great photo.
Currently, the Canal Sports Park is open to the public. Please be aware that it's not allowed to ride bicycles or balance cars, fly drones or put up tents on lawns, but there are special running tracks, professional skateboarding slopes, sandpits and outdoor amusement facilities for children. It's a great spot for daily exercise and some family time.
Qiantang Roller Skating Center
Qiantang Roller Skating Center (钱塘轮滑中心) is located at the base of Qiantang District Dongbuwan headquarters. The total construction area is about 36 thousand square meters. When viewed from a bird's eye view, the venue is like two Roman numerals "6" combined and is also like a "whirlwind spinning top", integrating the beautiful scenery of West Lake and the charm of the Asian Games.
It is the first competition venue in the country with a hyperboloid roller skating track. The red, yellow, blue and purple belts change alternately, showing the vitality of sports and the youth and the fashion possessed by roller skating.
The multi-element cultural landscape and the beautiful night scenery of Hangzhou complement each other, reaching a harmonious unity of art and modernity.
Fuyang Water Sports Center
Fuyang Water Sports Center (富阳水上运动中心), situated on the southern bank of Beizhijiang River, is inspired by the Fuchun landscape. The main body of the building is designed based on the shape of undulating mountains. Through smooth auxiliary lines, the landscape design demonstrates the “water” culture.
The roof of the venue is equipped with green vegetation, just like "a garden in the air", and "an industrial forest", which is integrated with the surrounding mountains and rivers, in line with the "green" concept of the Asian Games.
There is a riverside viewing belt on both sides of the venue, so in addition to being an Asian Games venue, it is also an excellent place to take pictures and go sightseeing! The terminal tower on the river and the scenic trail are all good places for great photos.
