Brief of Dipu Ancient Town

Dipu Ancient Town is the east gate of Tonglu County, Hangzhou, and is separated from Fuyang District by a stream. Dipu has a history of over 900 years and in the village are still preserved many buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Dipu was selected as the provincial historical and cultural village/town in 2016 and one of the third group of national historical and cultural villages in 2007.

In the center of the village, there is a pond, around which rural residential houses are built. A stream flows by the village. The layout is kind of like Hongcun Village in southern Anhui. Of the ancient residential houses scattered around the pond, a few have remained while many were destroyed in the Cultural Revolution, but one can still see from them the past prosperity of the village.

The tall horse-head-shaped walls and lanes paved with gravel are a landscape commonly seen in the ancient villages in Jiangnan Region. The buildings built with gravel used to be for the poor people, which are gradually disappearing with the development of the economy and the society.

Dipu Ancient Town still preserves its underground water system, which is similar to Karez Well in Turpan. The underground water system is built in the Ming Dynasty. The underground spring water is transported to all corners of the village through the criss-cross underground passages. Every section of the passage has a water-intake=. To date, the water system is still in use, bringing many conveniences to villagers’ life.

Dipu Ancient Village is also home to Songlong Ecological Landscape Area (松垅生态景观区), which occupies an area of over 40 mu (1 mu is roughly equal to 666 sq m) and is home to a dozen of over-200-year-old ancient trees, with the oldest over 800 years old.
