According to legend, Yanzhou Shrimp Lantern originated from the early Ming Dynasty and the late Yuan Dynasty, having a history of over 600 years. The shrimp lantern resembles the appearance of the freshwater shrimps in Xin’an River with details good as real. When performing, these lanterns sometimes bend, sometimes turn around, sometimes scurry, and sometimes jump. They “shake heads and tails”, “make circles on the ground”, and “celebrate the arrival of spring”. The big lanterns have big moves while the little ones are more agile. Meicheng people got the inspiration from the freshwater shrimps from the river and put them onto the stage, using this special way to show that even small creatures like shrimps can have the spirits of soaring just like giant dragons. It has already been included on the list of the second group of Zhejiang provincial intangible cultural heritage.
