Gongshu Canal Sports Park to Open Soon

What do the venues for the Asian Games look like? Gongshu Canal Sports Park will soon be open to the public. Would you like to see it?

On October 31, the park passed the final acceptance testing of Hangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee, marking the official completion of this comprehensive park which is themed on national fitness and will serve as the venue for table tennis, break dance and field hockey tournaments in Hangzhou Asian Games.

It is scheduled to open to the public in December, and a table tennis trial competition will be held from November 12 to 14.

Situated in Shenhua Area, Gongshu District, the park covers a total area of 115.48 acres and a total construction area of 185,000 square meters and extends to Xueyuan North Road in the east, Fengtan Road in the west, Shenhua Road in the south and Liuxiang Road in the north. It consists of one gymnasium and one stadium, one square and two centers.

This is the largest newly-built venue for Asian Games in the main city area of Hangzhou and the first comprehensive urban sports park in Zhejiang Province, which integrates stadiums, parks, sports fields and commercial facilities.

In the park, the gymnasium in the south resembles an enlarged jade Cong and the stadium in the north looks like an oil-paper umbrella. Surrounded by lush green grass, clear water, blue sky and white clouds, they are very gorgeous!

The Gymnasium: Jade Cong

During Hangzhou Asian Games, the gymnasium, with a total construction area of 21,477 square meters, will host the tournaments of table tennis and break dance. It has three floors, one underground and two above the ground.

From outside, it is irregularly oval-shaped, decorated with fish-scale curtain walls made of both fish-belly-shaped hyperbolic metal panels and rhombus-shaped glass panels. It looks like a jade Cong and also like a cobblestone encircled by Beizhuang River.

Inside, there are 7,000 seats and 204 sets of LED lamps to meet the needs of 4K HD shooting, TV broadcasting and emergency lighting for the whole venue.

Both sides are equipped with high-definition LED screens, and in the middle is a funnel-shaped central screen system suspended from the ceiling, which can achieve a number of tasks such as capturing wonderful moments, playing back eye-catching shots, synchronizing real-time live broadcast, updating competition information, timing and scoring, and broadcasting advertisements during the competitions, etc.

The Stadium: Hangzhou Umbrella

The stadium inside the park will host the field hockey competitions during Hangzhou Asian Games.

Known as “Hangzhou Umbrella,” it resembles an oil paper umbrella. The frame of the “umbrella” is made of steel structures and its edge is made of a 120-meter-long steel pipe.

The main part of the stadium is a light and elegant large-span roof that provides shade for the spectators. Two powerful arch-shaped elements support the entire grandstand, covered with a cross-fiber skin that gives it a symbolic meaning. At a glance, one can feel a sense of power and dynamism.

In its west is the entrance hall for the audience, nestled within a curved glass curtain wall in a circular direction. Light penetrates through the glass and creates a beautiful scene.

The stadium has 4870 seats and multiple functions like sports teaching, training, advanced competition and social services.

During the design of the special lighting program for sports events, the stadium took into account the impact of spill light from the height of lamps to the surrounding buildings. Through professional design models, a shading system and reflection system from different angles were customized to control and utilize light and effectively solve the problem of light trespass to the surrounding environment.

Sanye Lake and Underground Business Valley

Inside the park, besides Beizhuang River meandering through it, there is a manmade lake named Sanye Lake, with an area of 14,000 square meters. It looks like a clover signifying hope, hence the name.

In the central area of the park, there is a ribbon-like underground business valley, which is 10 meters below the ground and extends for 557 meters from south to north.

The valley has a gently sloping terrain and large steps and is like a central axis that naturally links the northern and southern parcels. On the left and right sides of the valley are pedestrian bridges spanning Yuying Road, and there are several open evacuation stairs to connect the buildings and landscapes on the first and second underground floors.

The park will not only be used to host the Asian Games, but also serve the public after the games for a very long time.

In the future, both the gymnasium and stadium in the park will be developed into comprehensive sports venues. For example, the field hockey venue can be changed into a soccer field, and the table tennis venue can be used for basketball or badminton to meet the needs of citizens nearby for fitness purposes.
