Brief of Zhedong Canal Main Course

Zhedong Canal Main Course(浙东运河主线) starts from Xixing Street of Binjiang and empties into the sea from Ningbo. It meanders for 239km.

Zhedong Canal was dug during the Spring and Autumn Period(770BC-221BC) at Shaoxing city, 2 hours’ drive from Hangzhou. During the Western Jin Dynasty(265-316), Xixing Canal was dredged. Zhedong Canal was bound to the west by Qiantang River and to the east by the East Sea ever since.

During the Southern Song Dynasty, Hangzhou, known as Lin’an at that time, functioned as the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279).

Main functions of the Zhedong Canal include transportation, irrigation, and flood-control. A wealth of historic relics scatters its banks. Among them, 3 belong to national relics and 20 are under provision level protection. Ancient water towns, such as Xixing Old Town(西兴古镇), are not to be missed.
