Peach Blossoms intermingled with Willow Trees

The beautiful scene of “Peach Blossoms intermingled with Willow Trees” finds its fullest expression on the Bai and Su Causeways. Since the 11th century, Su Dongpo(1037-1101), a renowned poet living in the Northern Song Dynasty, contributed greatly to romanticizing West Lake, by planting peach and willow trees at regular intervals. When spring sets in, this aesthetically pleasing scene of willows tossing amidst blooming peach flowers has inspired countless poets, painters and calligraphers since remote antiquity, which in return, has itself become a draw card for visitors to West Lake.
