Hangzhou Opera (杭剧), also named Wulin Opera (武林班), is a local opera genre in Hangzhou. The singing and chanting of Hangzhou Opera are both based in Hangzhou dialect and are done in Zhongzhou rhythm (中州韵), a rhythm many Han Nationality traditional opera types used in singing and chanting. The tune is melodic and simple, and the singing is rough and high-pitched. In 2009, Hangzhou Opera and Huanglong Hangzhou Opera were restored based on the cast of Hangzhou Comic Art Theater (杭州滑稽艺术剧院) and Hangzhou Huanglong Yueju Opera. Its many new plays have received provincial and municipal prizes.
