Tri-Character Opera (淳安三脚戏) is a folk opera that prevails in rural villages of Chun’an County of Hangzhou. The opera mainly has three characters, the young man’s role, the young women’s role and the funny role. That’s why it’s called Tri-Character Opera. Because Chun’an used to be called Muzhou, hence the opera is also called Muju Opera. The opera is usually performed in the Chun’an dialect and mainly features rural daily life. It is easy to understand and is more known for comedy. The characters in Muju Opera aren’t categorized, free of performance in costumes and programmed acts. In performance, characters sing while dancing, which is amiable and natural with strong local features and the delight of life. It is widely received by local people.
