The Hangzhou brocade technique uses Hangzhou-produced mulberry silk as the material and involves weaving the brocade with hands on a specially-made jacquard brocade machine. The history of the Hangzhou brocade can be traced back to the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period when Qian Liu, the King of Wuyue Kingdom set up a government-owned silk workshop in Hangzhou. The “Hangzhou Weaving Bureau” in the Ming and Qing dynasties was one of the three major government-owned weaving organizations at the time, whose products were exclusively for the imperial court. It played a vital role in the history of brocade’s development in China. Hangzhou brocade technique represented by “Dujinsheng Brocade (都锦生织锦)” contains 58 traditional handmade brocade procedures.
