Seal Engraving (Xiling Seal-engravers' Society)

Xiling Seal- Engravers’ Society 金石篆刻(西泠印社) was founded in 1904. It is the oldest and most influential academic group in studying seal engraving in China. As early as the Yuan Dynasty, Zhao Mengfu (赵孟頫) from Wuxing and Wu Qiuyan (吾丘衍) from Hangzhou were the then famous seal engravers. Wang Mian (王冕) from Shanyin (once part of the current Shaoxing County) used marmor serpentinatum to produce seals, providing favorable conditions for the appearance of literati seal engraving. At the early stage of the rise of the late Ming Dynasty style, Hangzhou was an important city. During the Qianjia period of the Qing Dynasty, Ding Jin (丁敬) from Qiantang (the current Hangzhou) creatively founded Zhejiang-style seal engraving. After him, there have been Jiang Ren, Huang Yi, Xi Gang, Chen Yuzhong, Chen Hongshou, Zhao Zhishen and Qian Song, which were reputed to be Xiling Eight Seal-engraving masters (Xiling is the old name of Hangzhou).
