Xiao Re Hun (小热昏) is stemmed from “Shuochaobao (an art form telling royal court news)” commonly heard in Hangzhou streets in the late Qing Dynasty. In 1905, a man named Du Baolin (杜宝林) applied “Shuochaobao” in selling pear syrup candy, which evolved the original form of singing and telling news and amusing anecdote into programs with simple storylines, characters and conflicts, and put it on the stage with the name of Xiao Re Hun. Hangzhou’s Xiao Re Hun is sung and told in Hangzhou dialect with the accompaniment of small gong and bamboo clappers. The performance is interesting and humorous and has no regular performing venue.
