Yuhang Rolling Lantern

Yuhang Rolling Lantern (余杭滚灯) is a Han nationality folk dance with strong competitive features. It prevailed in Wengmei (翁梅) area in Yuhang District on the banks of Qiantang River. Wengmei area was near the north bank of Qiantang River. The salt industry in the area was prosperous in ancient times and pirates frequently invaded the area. To prevent this, the local people used Rolling Lantern to demonstrate military skills and compete with each other to show strength, in turn, to terrorize pirates. For hundreds of years thereafter, Yuhang people have viewed Rolling Lantern as a mascot, a way of keeping fit and a way of entertaining and it was handed down from generation to generation. In May, 2006, Yuhang Rolling Lantern was included in the first group of national-level intangible cultural heritage protection lists.
