Due to its geographical environment, climate, language and customs, Zhejiang has formed an art Guqin style that is distinguished from those in other areas, Zhejiang School Guqin Art. Its development can be divided into two periods according to time, the ancient period and the modern period. The ancient Guqin Art of Zhejiang School originated from the Southern Song Dynasty. Guo Chuwang (郭楚望) is considered the founder of the Guqin Art of Zhejiang School, the most important school in the Guqin circles at that time. The rise of modern Zhejiang School Guqin is preferably on account of the famous piano artist, Xu Yuanbai (徐元白). Now, there are the West Lake Guqin Club (西湖琴社), Xiayin Guqin House (霞影琴馆) in Hangzhou, which are the two main platforms for modern Zhejiang school Guqin activities.
